Let us not give up the habit of meeting together, as some have done, but let us encourage one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching. v25
Hebrews 10:19-25
If people are going to stay and get involved in the church, rather than just pass through, there are three basic things they need – to worship, to know and to belong.
Newcomers want to experience genuine worship. They want to feel they have encountered God in a deep and real way, and that a church service is not just superficial, or going through the motions.
Secondly, they need to know. This includes learning about their faith, but also knowing how things work at a practical level – who’s who, what’s what and where to find the things they need – basic information.
Most importantly, people need to feel they belong, and that they are not just anonymous – that there is real fellowship here, and someone cares. I’ve heard people say, “I went to that church and no one even greeted me. No one knew I was there!” There should be a warmth in our fellowship that makes people feel welcome.
People at the door can play a big role in this, but so can every member of the congregation.
What has your experience been in this regard? Have you ever felt a coldness or unwelcoming atmosphere in a church? What could you do to make visitors feel welcome?
We are the family of God, joined by the Spirit above.
